South Carolina is a  popular destination for campers in the United States. Camping is a fun activity for a group of friends or a family vacation. South Carolina can provide scenic views because it has large forested areas ideal for a family trip or outdoors adventure. The Blue Ridge Mountains are the highest range of the Appalachians and cross through South Carolina, providing a scenic views for those camping in the region. South Carolina's coast is known for its beautiful beaches on the Atlantic Ocean where there are many beach campsites. Some campgrounds along the coast are state operated, others are privately owned. If you are planning a camping trip to South Carolina, there is a variety of landscapes to choose. Note: Some campgrounds allow pets, some do not. Some have full hookups, others do not. Some are privately owned while others are state owned. Each campground is different and therefore offers different amenities. Most are family oriented.

Charleston SC Area Camping Sites

In the Charleston area, rent a cabin or go camping at Givhans Ferry State park.

James Island County Park and Splash Zone Waterpark offers a camping.

Francis Marion National Forest has tent campsites and full hookup sites.

Columbia and Lake Murray Camping sites

In the Columbia and Lake Murray area, go camping at Lake Murray.

Dreher Island State Recreation Area is located on Lake Murray. There are 3 islands that are linked together via bridges. Enjoy lakeside camping, picnicking and trails.

Low Country Camping Sites

Edisto Beach State Park offers vacation cabins and campsites.

Old 96 District campgrounds

Baker Creek State Park offer lakeside campsites. The area has forestland, waterfowl and wildlife.

Calhoun Falls State Recreation Area offers lakeside camping on Lake Russell. Go fishing, hiking, picnic, play tennis and swim.

Hamilton Branch State Recreation area offers lakefront camping sites along Strom Thurmond Lake.

J. Strom Thurmond Dam and Lake has camping sites.

Lake Greenwood State Recreation Area has 212 miles of shoreline for lakeside camping.

Old English District

Andrew Jackson State Park, north of Lancaster, has a campground.

Carolina Adventure World, in Winnsboro, has cabins and campsites for tents and RVs.

Cheraw State Recreation Area, south of Cheraw, has cabins and family campsites near Lake Juniper.

Chester State Park, southwest of Chester, is a 523 acre park with a lake and campsites.

Lake Wateree near Winnsboro has 242 miles of shoreline with lakeside camping.

Sand Hills State Forest near Patrick offers camping sites near lake with ponds and wildlife obervation opportunies.

Thoroughbred Country

Aiken State Natural area near Aiken has camping, picnicking and hiking.

Branwell State Park near Blackville, has 2 lakes with vacation cabins, campsites and nature trail.

Upcountry

Croft State Natural Area, SE of Spartanburg, has 2 lakes with camping sites.

Devils Fork State Park is northwest of Pickens. It is located on Lake Jocassee. Lakefront camping.

Jones Gap State Park Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area, northwest of Greenville, offer trailside camping sites.

Keowee Toxaway State Natural Area on Lake Keowee, has a rental cabin and a campground.

Lake Hartwell State Recreation Area, in Fair Play, has a campground.

Oconee State Park has two mountain lakes with cabins, campgrounds, picnic areas and hiking trails. It is located northwest of Walhalla.

Paris Mountain State Park near the city of Greenville in the Upcountry has 1275 acres of forested land with family campgrounds and picnic areas.

Pleasant Ridge Country Park is located near Cleveland. There are cabins and campgrounds.

Sadlers Creek State Recreation Area, in Anderson, has lakeside campground on Lake Hartwell. It is located in Anderson.

Sumter National Forest, near Mountain Rest, has many state parks and campgrounds. Cherry Hill Campground is located in the Southern Appalachians in South Carolina, Cherry Hill Campground is in the shallow upper valley section of West Fork Creek in the Sumter National Forest.  Hiking trails, including the Cherry Hill Nature Trail and the Winding Stairs Trail are nearby. The Chattooga Wild and Scenic River is less than three miles away from the campgrounds, with scenic trails along the river's path.

Table Rock State Park, north of Pickens, has 2 lakes with campgrounds.
